Save Our Schools began as a group of educators and activists who came together with a common goal, to speak out against the attacks on public education and public school teachers. More joined in. SOS has reorganized. We are a real national organization, grounded in Four Guiding Principles. (Click each bullet statement for details.)
- Equitable funding across all public schools and school systems
- An end to high stakes testing used for the purpose of student, teacher, and school evaluation
- Teacher, family and community leadership in forming public education policies
- Curriculum developed for and by local school communities
Our response is to help organize a national resistance, a broad-tent movement where all voices can be heard and where decisions can be made democratically. That is the operational idea behind our National People’s Platform Convention, scheduled for August 3 – 5 in D.C. A broad range of groups and individuals have been asked to help shape proposals and platform planks that will be offered for adoption at the Convention. We will have workshops where we do training and education at the convention; we will re-frame the whole national narrative around education so people will know there is another perspective behind what they see in Waiting For Superman or hear on FOX News.
We know there will be disagreements over planks and issues. But with your input and work in the spirit of building unity, those differences can move us forward. We invite all those who care about public education and are willing to stand up and be heard to join us.
